Review
[Venom]에 이어 3년만에 더 강력한 야수의 모습으로 돌아왔다.
이번 앨범에도 여전히 Rob Rock과 James Pulli, 그리고 Jon Dette가 멤버로써 함께하였고, 앨범 [Pedal to the Metal] 때부터 사운드를 잡아주었던 록계의 명 엔지니어 Greg Reely가 믹싱에 함께하였다. (Greg Reely는 Fear Factory, Machine Head, Coldplay, Devin Townsend, Paradise Lost 등과 함께 작업한 캐다나 출신의 프로듀서이자 엔지니어이다) 또한 정식 멤버는 아니지만 오랫동안 밴드의 키보디스트로 활동한 Ed Roth도 ‘Phantom of the Opera’에서 키보드 연주를 도와주었다.
특히 [Venom] 앨범에 이어 이번 일본반 앨범에도 Versailles, Jupiter 출신의 일본 기타리스트 TERU가 아트웍을 담당하여 앨범의 컨셉을 더욱 높혀주었다. 크리스는 TERU에게 “늑대 인간”을 그려달라고 요청하였는데 커버 아트웍 전체적으로 반영된 것을 볼 수 있다. 앨범 아트웍 뿐만아니라 앨범 타이틀, 가사, 2곡의 커버곡 등에서도 앨범 전체적인 “Beast”의 컨셉을 내세워 좀더 색깔있는 앨범이 발매되었다.
[Stand in Line] 앨범에서의 두곡의 커버곡(Since You’ve Been Gone, Somewhere over the Rainbow) 외에는 지금껏 커버곡을 앨범에 담은 적이 없는데 이번 앨범에서는 오페라의 유령의 메인 타이틀인 앤드루 로이드 웨버의 ‘Phantom of the Opera’, 블랙 사바스의 초기 명곡 중에 하나인 ‘Symptom of the Universe’ 까지 2곡의 커버곡을 담아 이채롭다. (개인적으로 ‘Phantom of the Opera’는 Tarja가 Nightwish의 보컬 시절에 불렀던 곡과 비교해서 들으면 재미있다) 물론 라이브 공연에서는 Randy Rhoads 시절 Ozzy Osbourne의 곡, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple 등의 곡들을 연주한바 있다.
본작에 대한 구체적인 앨범의 평가나 분석은 사실 의미가 없다고 생각한다. 헤비메틀 시장의 축소, 음반시장의 다변화, 공연문화의 확대, 미디어 채널의 변화 등 30년이 넘은 지금까지 밴드가 여전히 음악시장에서 살아남아있고 건재하며 앨범을 발매하고 있다는 것 자체로도 큰 의미를 지닌다고 생각한다.
그럼에도 불구하고 크리스와 롭의 나이가 무색해질만큼 각 곡에서는 여전히 파워와 shred 플레이를 보여주고 있다. 특히 Frontiers Music사의 유튜브 채널을 통해 앨범 발매 전에 미리 공개된 ‘Run For Your Life’의 아드레날린 넘치는 파워, ‘Masquerade’에서는 크리스만의 얼터네이트 피킹 등을 감상할 수 있다. 전체적으로 전작 [Venom]의 연장선상에 있는 앨범이며 그보다 좀더 파워풀해졌다.
오래전부터 많은 이들이 지적한 그들의 많은 앨범에서 보이는 비슷한 플레이나 작법은 그냥 ‘Impellitteri 사운드’로 묻어둘 수 밖에 없을 듯 하다. ‘Gates of Hell’의 후렴구는 [Pedal to the Metal] 앨범에 수록된 곡들과 유사하며, ‘Fire It Up’의 메인 리프 또한 ‘Venom’과 유사하다. 이는 사실 밴드 Impellitteri가 (그는 아니라고 항상 주창하지만) 크리스 임펠리테리의 개인 밴드로써 묻힌 결과라고 생각된다. 오랜 파트너인 Rob Rock의 작곡이 접목되거나 James Pulli의 협업 플레이가 많이 묻어났다면 훨씬더 다채로운 앨범이 되었을 것이다. 특히 Rob Rock의 경우 그의 솔로앨범과 Driver 앨범을 통해 작곡가나 파워 메탈 보컬리스트로써 명성을 쌓았기에 보컬 멜로디에 있어 다양함을 줄 수 있으나 Impellitteri 앨범의 8할은 사실 크리스 임펠리테리가 담당하고 있기에 나타나는 문제라고 보여진다. 언제나 그럿듯이 2곡의 커버곡을 제외하고 본작 또한 작곡은 Chris Impellitteri, 가사는 Rob Rock이 모두 담당하고 있다.
앨범은 일본 Victor Entertainment사를 통해 2018년 10월 3일 전세계 최초로 발매되었다. 일본반에는 6곡의 뮤직비디오가 DVD에 포함된 CD+DVD 한정판(Limited Edition)도 함께 발매되었다. 유럽쪽 배급은 Frontiers Records사를 통해 이루어졌으며 일본반보다 9일 늦은 10월 12일에 다른 앨범 커버로 발매되었다. Frontiers Records사는 CD 뿐만아니라 Gatefold 형태의 Vinyl도 함께 발매하였다.

전작 [Venom]과 동일하게 총 4곡이 Def Leppard, Van Halen, 그리고 New Kids on the Block의 비디오를 맡은 바있는 John Logsdon 감독하에 제작되었고, Frontiers Records사의 유튜브 채널을 통해 순차적으로 공개되었다. 앨범에서 참여한 Jon Dotte은 앨범 발매 후 사실상 탈퇴했기때문에 4곡의 뮤직 비디오에서는 모두 Patrick Johansson이 화면이 나타나고 있다. Patrick Johansson은 부산 락 페스티발에서도 함께한 바 있다.
항상 앨범 발매 후 가지는 코스로써 일본 공연을 해왔는데 이번에도 마찬가지로 2019년도에 도쿄, 나고야, 오사카 등 총 3곳에서 공연이 이루어졌다. 다만 앨범 발매 이듬해인 2019년 5월에 미국 3개 지역에서 Warm-Up Shows(정식 공연 이전의 예행연습 공연이라고 보면된다)를 먼저 하였고, 2019년 6월 초에 일본 공연을 진행하였다. 도쿄 공연의 경우에는 직접 그들의 공연을 보기위해 다녀왔는데 추후 기회가 되면 리뷰하도록 하겠다.
